Positive Psychology, Immersion, Part One (North of Neutral) will be relevant to those who want to present on, teach on, consult on, and coach in positive psychology and want to know the newest, most effective approaches for connecting with the public and with decision makers.

Part Two of the Positive Psychology Immersion Master Class, taught each fall, is Applications in Action. (For graduates of Fall, 2007, Applications in Action, this class, Part One will supply the deep history and background of the field that is necessary for full mastery.)

Positive Psychology Immersion, Part One (North of Neutral) reflects Chris' unique vantage point gained from both years of experience, research, writing, teaching, and his constant communication with the world's leading researchers in this field.

The class incorporates the state-of-the-art in theory and research circa 2008 and is based on the rich, deep river of knowledge in Chris' new textbook, A Primer in Positive Psychology. And it will be based on newly published and just breaking unpublished research in the field as well.

Learning Objectives

  •  Know Chris' unique take on positive psychology's history and its current topics of interest

  • Understand Chris' view on specifically how a positive psychological approach differs from business-as-usual psychology

  • Be familiar with the most current, state-of-the-art theories and research with respect to positive experiences, positive traits, interpersonal relationships, and enabling institutions. This will include both published and new, unpublished research.

  • Be able to apply a positive psychology perspective to a wide range of interventions in such fields as coaching, consulting, OD, therapy, teaching, business and in one's personal life.

Chris Peterson will provide a rich and varied reading list of research articles and books. When possible these will be hot linked to the actual article on the internet.

Christopher Peterson teaches this course by global teleconference from his office in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Chris is Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan and Templeton Senior Fellow at the Positive Psychology Center of the University of Pennsylvania.

He received his PhD. in social psychology from the University of Colorado and respecialized in clinical psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed a clinical psychology internship at the Philadelphia VAMC. One of the leading figures in positive psychology, Chris is a member of the Positive Psychology Steering Committee, a member of the board of directors of the Gallup Organization Positive Psychology Institute, a consulting editor of the Journal of Positive Psychology, and the positive psychology series editor of Oxford University Press.

He is the research director of the Values in Action (VIA) project, the most ambitious undertaking to date from the explicit vantage of positive psychology; the VIA project describes, classifies, and measures important strengths of character.

Chris is an award-winning teacher at the University of Michigan and holds the Arthur F. Thurnau Chair in honor of his teaching accomplishments. Among the world's 100 most widely-cited psychologists during the past twenty years, Chris is the co-author of Character Strengths and Virtues (2004) and the author of A Primer in Positive Psychology (2006).
